Staff Accountant

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. And we fight for them — in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion.

We are hiring Staff Accountant who will report to the Controller as a member of our three person Finance team.  In this role, s/he will manage all accounting processes for the organization including AR/AP input, GL reconciliation and month end close. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable processes including:
    • Manual checks and ACH payments
    • Insurance payments and transit payments
    • Lockbox, check, and credit card deposits
    • Grant receivables and pledges
  • Reconcile all bank accounts in an accurate and timely manner
  • Complete balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Reconcile Sage accounting system to Sage FR50 accounting system
  • Perform Audit yearly prep
  • Book all journal entries for month end close
  • Reconcile bi-weekly payroll
  • Process all 1099's
  • Monitor operating cash account
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies/issues as needed
  • Review and analyze financial statements to complete monthly, quarterly, and year end close process
  • Ad hoc projects as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years accounting experience preferably in the non-profit sector
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel
  • Knowledge of the Concur and Sage systems
  • Ability to work independently and think analytically
  • Strong decision making ability
  • Great communication, organization, and problem solving skills
  • Resourceful and efficient
  • Sense of humor
