The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law is a non-partisan public policy and law institute that focuses on improving the systems of democracy and justice. A singular institution – part think-tank, part public interest law firm, part advocacy group – the Brennan Center combines research, scholarship, legislative and legal advocacy, and communications to win meaningful, measurable change in the public sector.
We are seeking interns to provide administrative and clerical support to staff in our New York office in our Communications, Democracy, Development, Finance & Operations, Human Resources, Justice, and Liberty & National Security Programs/Departments.
Responsibilities: All interns will assist with general administrative, research and clerical work for the Brennan Center, including filing, photocopying, answering phones, shipping and mailing, coordinating meetings, drafting routine correspondence and covering the reception desk. Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on program work.
In addition to administrative and reception duties, specific responsibilities for each department include:
Communications – Tracking and organizing press coverage; managing our press database; creating press clips and tear-sheets; building and updating press lists; creating and editing event transcripts; and assisting with public and private events.
Democracy – providing administrative support for litigation; conducting research; tracking legislation; gathering and analyzing data; updating web pages and blogs; and preparing employee expense reports.
Development – assisting in event organization; updating the fundraising database; researching funding opportunities; tracking public appearances; and assisting in donor correspondence.
Finance & Operations - assisting in processing payables and receivables; backing up Accounts Payable staff, after learning software and systems; processing job postings and applications; updating job recruiting sites list and contact info; assisting Human Resources staff with various HR projects.
Human Resources - intern will assist the HR Generalist and Operations Coordinator with research projects, on-boarding of new hires, recruiting support, general administrative, and clerical work for the HR/Operations Department, including updating data spreadsheets, filing, photocopying, answering phones, shipping and mailing, coordinating meetings, drafting routine correspondence and covering the reception desk. Additionally, there will be opportunities to attend and observe substantive meetings, events, and conversations on Brennan Center program work.
Justice –compiling a list of relevant daily news stories on criminal justice; tracking the status of legislation and recent developments in the criminal justice field; researching and building lists of key stakeholders; maintaining program database, proof-reading and fact-checking for upcoming program reports and publications; conducting background research for media appearances and blog posts; helping to organize and coordinate program events.
Liberty & National Security - conducting research on program issues; supporting LNS’s Freedom of Information project; copy-editing and cite checking research papers, blogs, op-eds, or other materials; assisting with scheduling, mailing publications, and maintaining contact lists.
Qualifications: The ideal candidates are independent, self-starters; detail-oriented; energetic; punctual; and highly organized. Interns must also have excellent, research, writing, and analytical skills, as well as a passion for our issues. Experience with Windows XP, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word a must. Database experience is very helpful. Must be open to evolving responsibilities.
This internship is only open to current undergraduate students.
Hours: 15-25 hours per week.
Pay: $12.50 per hour.
Duration: One semester.
