Development Associate 

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to revitalize our systems of democracy and justice. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all.  Among our core priorities, we fight to protect voting rights, end mass incarceration, strengthen checks and balances, and preserve the rule of law. 

We seek a Development Associate to join an ambitious, high performing, and collaborative Development Department. Our in-house team of nine professionals is charged with raising upward of $15 million annually from a solid, diverse base of supporters, including: national foundations and institutional funders; major donors and family foundations; direct mail and online contributors; and an annual gala event, the Brennan Legacy Awards Dinner.  As the Center commemorates its 20th anniversary, we have launched a special campaign for two new initiatives, the Brennan Legacy Fund and the Inez Milholland Endowment for Democracy, as well as a Planned Giving program. 

Reporting to the Vice President for Development, the Development Associate provides overall support for the department’s efforts. The Development Associate also assists in planning the annual Brennan Legacy Awards Dinner, which takes place each November. 

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Schedule and coordinate agendas for weekly working meetings with the Brennan Center’s President, Program leadership, and Communications team 
  • Manage departmental calendar, organize internal meetings including all materials and communications 
  • Support Development Manager and Vice President for Development in planning the Brennan Legacy Awards Dinner, a year-round undertaking, but especially time-intensive between the months of August and November. Key aspects of this work include: 
    • Creating and managing lists of relevant stakeholders, including honorees, sponsors, invitees, and ticket buyers, among others 
    • Managing multiple mailings and e-mailings 
    • Helping prepare and edit event-related materials 
    • Coordinating with event consultant, departmental managers, and organizational leadership on outreach and correspondence 
    • Maintaining all event-related records 
  • Take lead on executing Development-led mailings, e-blasts, webinars, briefings, and donor events 
  • Coordinate requests for financial materials to Controller 
  • Assist in prospect research and preparation for donor meetings 
  • Assist in submission of funding proposals, including preparing attachments and other institutional documents 
  • Provide administrative support for Vice President for Development, and for department, as needed 
  • Supervise departmental interns on projects, as specified 


The ideal candidate will have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of related experience, preferably in development or an advocacy organization, or on issues relevant to the Brennan Center’s mission 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to take direction and respond quickly and productively to feedback 
  • Top-notch written and oral communication skills 
  • Sound professional and social judgment, ability to build relationships with and instill confidence in colleagues, both internal and external 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced atmosphere and pivot gracefully to emergency needs, while meeting a steady stream of deadlines 
  • Creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and a sense of humor 
  • Strong organizational skills, initiative and self-direction, and attention to detail 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of computer programs (Word, Access, Excel, etc.) and facility with budgets 
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the Brennan Center
