Junior Accountant

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve our systems of democracy and justice. And we fight for them — in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion. 

We are hiring an Accounting Clerk to manage all accounting processes for the organization including AR/AP input, GL reconciliation, and month end close. The ideal candidate will combine a solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounts payable principles, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. S/he should be highly organized and detail-oriented and possess the ability to effectively work both independently or in a team setting. The Accounting Clerk will report to the Staff Accountant as a member of our three person Finance/Accounting team. 

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable processes 
  • Process manual checks, ACH payments, grant receivables and pledges 
  • Oversee vendor relationships: analyze accounts to ensure accurate payments, respond to inquiries, resolve billing issues and maintain contact information 
  • Enter all accounts payable invoices into the Abila MIP system 
  • Develop and implement A/P process improvements 
  • Organize weekly check runs 
  • Book journal entries 
  • Assist in annual audit and filing of 1099’s 
  • Reconcile Abila MIP accounting system to Sage FR50 system 
  • Assist with special projects as necessary 
  • Perform other tasks as assigned 

Required Qualifications: 

  • 2-4 years of experience in accounting, preferably in the nonprofit sector 
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting or finance 
  • Experience using Abila MIP (nonprofit) accounting software preferred 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Strong decision making ability 
  • Resourceful and efficient 
  • Sense of humor
