The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, the courts, and in the court of public opinion. 

Position Summary: 

The Brennan Center seeks an experienced and confident Staff Editor to play a key role in our growing editorial team. The Staff Editor will work closely with the Director of Editorial Strategy in shaping the Brennan Center’s revamped online content strategy, ensuring that we respond quickly to news developments and helping to position us as a leading voice on the issues of democracy and the Constitution that are currently at the center of the national conversation. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Assigning, editing and promoting posts from our Staff Writer in response to breaking news
  • Working closely with our Fellows and other outside writers to guide and edit opinion columns
  • Working with our Managing Editor to schedule and execute our editorial plan
  • Anticipating storylines on Brennan Center issues and planning ahead to take advantage of them
  • Editing and shaping reports and research to make accessible to the public without sacrificing our reputation for expertise 

Qualifications:

The position requires at least 3 years experience as a news editor.

In addition, the ideal candidate will bring:

  • the ability to think big picture about where the news is going and how to take advantage of it
  • a comfort level with the tools of online journalism, including social media
  • a willingness to work collaboratively, both with other editorial and communications team members and with the Brennan Center's issue experts
  • the ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment 
  • familiarity with and passion for Brennan Center issues of democracy, justice, and the Constitution
  • a sense of urgency appropriate to the current moment.

Salary: The salary is highly competitive in the field and commensurate with experience.  A generous benefits package is available as well.
